Bam’s On Fire has just knocked on the door for a first high-stakes victory and gets its last chance at Caulfield.
The mare will compete in the 40th Anniversary Group 3 Cup of Elvis Thurgood on Saturday, named after the jockey who suffered severe brain and spinal injuries in a fall during the 1980 Easter Cup.
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Bam’s On Fire has been ranked five times in terms of stakes, finishing second in his last three starts, all in group races, in Melbourne.
Maher and Eustace also agreed with Dr Drill during the race on Saturday, but he will remain in Sydney to participate in a reference race at Randwick on Saturday week.
In her last start, Bam’s On Fire was beaten half a length in group two Sunline Stakes at The Valley on March 20 after leading and she goes back 1600m to 1400m.
“She certainly deserves to be a stakes winner,” said Eustace.
“She had great preparation and was very brave in the Sunline Stakes.
“If we could make her a winner of the stakes before the end of the preparation, it would be ideal.
“She definitely went to another level of this preparation. It’s just a little bit of age and a bit of maturation.
“It looks like a pretty good race on paper and we’re going to go with confidence that it can run well.”
Eustace says that Bam’s On Fire has its whims and can hang in its races, but says that it has been able to find the rail in its last two races, which helps.
To be ridden by Jamie Kah, Bam’s On Fire has the barrier four and is the second favorite of $ 5 behind the last winner of Listed Wild Planet at $ 3.
“We will keep it simple,” said Eustace.
“She seems to have enjoyed finding the rail because she cannot then lock herself up, so we will be positive and drive.
“She missed a good mile on the last start, so we just kept her cool and nice at home and we can’t wait.”
There are three stakes races on the program on Saturday with Secret Blaze, formed by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the favorite for the Group Cup Easter Cup (2000m) while Relucent, formed by Chris Waller, leads the market for the final of the Galilee Listed series (2400m) for three. -years.
