To prepare for the tenth season at Wild Animal Park in Chittenango, owner Jeff Taylor oversaw ambitious projects, including a train trip and exhibits with black bears, African leopards, kangaroos and baboons. A bounce house playground has been renovated with artificial grass, lighting and a pavilion.
But as the team prepared the park for opening day, the coronavirus cases skyrocketed and New York State went into detention.
“We have probably invested about half a million dollars in the park during the offseason,” said Taylor. “And obviously you can’t plan this – but if we had known it was going to happen – we might have done it a little differently. But it’s just difficult because you can never plan something like this that. “
The park does not receive government funding. The private zoo operates on entrance fees and sales of gift shops, money that would have been earned in about a month when the park was to open.
In the meantime, veterinarians and other essential park staff will accept food deliveries and keep the animals fed. Although some animals have a special diet for the zoo, most primates – like bears and giraffes – love to snack on fruits and vegetables. Basil Leaf Ristorante and the Hilton Garden Inn have dropped off their coolers; Flo’s Diner in Canastota donated 150 pounds. of chicken, helping the park strengthen the supply of carnivores, who eat about 4,000 pounds of meat each month.
Even if animals are taken care of, staff miss community engagement outside the park in the form of their travel programs.

“We like to have them around; they are all great kids and hard workers and we just want to get back to work, ”said Taylor. “I have the best staff and the most important thing is to be able to take care of them so that they can also take care of their families.”
As jobless claims hit record highs, the park has avoided layoffs for now and Taylor plans to review government programs and loans to keep the park stable.
“Financially and mentally, winter is so long and you feel energized by spring, you feel like you’ve managed to open up,” said Taylor. “And now, all of a sudden, we’ve gone through winter and now we don’t know how long we’re going to be closed.”
