The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus exceeded 16,500 on Thursday, as New York announced its highest death toll in a day. The virus has sickened more than 1.6 million people worldwide, killing more than 95,600 people, according to Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, there have been more than 465,300 confirmed cases.
In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been removed from intensive care where he was being treated for a coronavirus, a spokesman for Downing Street said in a statement Thursday. Johnson, 55, was the first world leader to test positive for the virus.
“The prime minister was transferred from intensive care to the service tonight, where he will be closely watched during the first phase of his recovery,” the spokesman said, adding that Johnson was “in a very good mood”.
