The Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) traded 74,950 tonnes of goods, which is worth $ 117 million (3.84 billion birr), in March, the exchange said in a statement to 2Merkato.com.
During the 21 trading days of the month, 29,784 tonnes of coffee, 25,691 tonnes of sesame, 8,122 tonnes of soybeans, 7,338 tonnes of white and red peas and 4,014 tonnes of green mung beans were traded.
Coffee represented 63% of the commercial value and 40% of the volume of trade during the period. Export coffee took the lion’s share, representing 66% of the commercial value and 70% of the commercial volume of the total quantity of coffee marketed. The total quantity of coffee marketed during the period amounted to 2.4 billion birr.
A total of 25,691 tonnes of sesame were traded on the ECX platform, for a value of almost 1.07 billion birr. The figure showed a drop of 28% in volume and 30% in value compared to the previous month.
The other products traded during the month were: 8,122 tonnes of soybeans for 97.14 million birr, 7,338 tonnes of white and red peas for 155.95 million birr and 4,014 tonnes of green mung beans for 104, 6 million birr.
ECX further indicated that it was taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread and effects of the coronavirus in its headquarters and clearing-house mechanisms.
