Reddit is testing a point system powered by Ethereum for one of its online communities.
The pilot program will build a new wallet as part of the Reddit app and store user “community points” in the form of ERC-20 tokens, according to an informational video posted by a community manager for Unstoppable Domains, a startup that creates domains based on blockchain.
A Reddit spokesperson confirmed the existence of the program for Decipher.
“We are constantly experimenting with ways to support communities Reddit. In this case, we are working with a community to test a feature that represents a user’s involvement in a community.
We value and seek feedback from the community as we continue to explore the features that engage our users and our communities. “
Users will earn community points when their posts or comments are updated. Points will be posted publicly. Users can then spend their points on buying special subscriptions that unlock exclusive features on Reddit like badges, animated emojis and GIFS, according to the news video. The points spent will be burned to increase the value of the assets of other members of the community.
Since the points will be decentralized and stored on the Ethereum blockchain, Reddit moderators will have no opportunity to interact with or change the balance of a user.
