A 53-year-old man, North Syracuse, was arrested Friday night and charged with driving the wrong way on Interstate 90 when he was drunk, according to New York state police.
James T. Diffenderfer has been charged with impaired driving, reckless second degree danger and reckless driving, police said.
At around 10 p.m., police saw a man later identified as Diffenderfer driving west on the eastbound lanes on the New York State Thruway, just east of the Weedsport toll plaza, police said.
Soldiers tried to catch and stop the vehicle, police said. While the soldiers were chasing the vehicle driven by Diffenderfer, other drivers had to “take evasive action” to avoid hitting his vehicle, police said.
The soldiers later discovered that the vehicle Diffenderfer was driving on the shoulder of the thoroughfare with its headlights off and stopped him, police said.
Diffenderfer was taken to the Syracuse State Police barracks and then transported to the Cayuga County Correctional Center pending charges, police said.
