Hours after the incident, police arrested eight men from a gurdwara in the nearby village of Balbera. Police said they recovered weapons, money and cannabis during the raid.
A group of “Nihangs” reached the vegetable market at around 6:15 a.m. and were prevented by Mandi board staff from entering the market because they did not have a pass.
The Nihang first beat the employee on the Mandi board of directors, then entered the vegetable market. The police present on the scene intervened and soon a scuffle broke out between them and the Nihangs during which the latter pulled out swords and cut the hand of ASI Harjeet Singh, while SHO Sadar Bilkar Singh and ASI Raj Singh were injured shoulders, arms and legs.
After attacking the police, the men fled to Gurudwara Khichdi Sahib and a team of police chased them.
Patiala chief police superintendent Mandeep Singh Sidhu and other senior officials quickly arrived and dispatched additional forces to catch the accused.
Meanwhile, ASI Harjeet Singh, Inspector Bikkar Singh and ASI Raj Singh were taken to Rajindra hospital from where Harjeet Singh was referred to PGI Chandigarh.
SSP Sidhu stated that a case under relevant sections of the law had been registered and that efforts were under way to arrest the four accused.
He said they had contacted the Punjab police headquarters in Chandigarh and that a team had already contacted the doctors at PGI Chandigarh. “We are trying to ensure the best medical assistance for the ASI, while measures according to the law are taken against the Nihangs”.
