The AFL, working with the Victoria State Government, has revealed designs for the upgraded Marvel Stadium and Docklands Quarter, which will provide a 365-day-a-year hub for all things sports and entertainment.
Tourism, Sports and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula helped unveil the initial designs of renowned architects Grimshaw with Smartform, and announced that the project will soon be tendered to complete the transformation of the Marvel stadium.

The Marvel Stadium and surrounding enclosure works will include revitalized eastern and southern entry points, including a new ‘Town Square’ transforming the space into an open and accessible area seven days a week for people to enjoy. meet from Monday to Sunday or to attend a sport. event or concert.
A new city-side extension will feature multipurpose rooms with views of the arena and the CBD as a backdrop.
The iconic new Town Square will welcome pedestrians arriving on the Bourke Street walkway from Southern Cross Station – a combination of indoor and outdoor spaces with some stadium walls removed to provide a visual connection to the playing field.
Markets and community gatherings will fit naturally into the space while the split-level hospitality businesses will be open to the public and can be converted into pay zones for AFL matches and concerts.
Overlooking Wurundjeri Way, an extension of the “City Edge” stadium will renovate public and reception areas and offer views of Melbourne’s CBD.
The fan experience will be improved with major renovations to the public food and beverage areas connected to the arena and overlooking the playing field, more spaces to meet friends before, during and after the match, two new Larger notice boards hanging from the roof at each end of the venue, a new sensory room and changing rooms to ensure Marvel Stadium is a place that welcomes people of all skill levels, and additional bicycle parking to promote sustainable transportation.
The day-to-day experience of the event will also be enhanced with improved lighting and technology upgrades throughout the stadium. Local clubs on a match day will be able to fully integrate their brand and club colors both outside and inside a new development – from the lobby, to the new entrances and to the reception halls.
Athletes will also benefit from the upgraded team facilities to provide state-of-the-art locker rooms for men and women.
AFL general manager Gillon McLachlan said the improved design would provide the best experience for stadium fans and visitors to the compound.
“The Marvel Stadium district will be one of the best sports and entertainment destinations in the world, with its proximity to the city and world-class entertainment and dining before and after the event,” said McLachlan.
“The designers captured our desire to amplify the stadium’s ability to host multiple events over the course of a calendar year and to ensure that the fan experience was in mind when designing the upgrade. level.
