On December 19, 2020, Swissmedic, the drug authorization body in Switzerland, approved the first Covid-19 vaccine for the Swiss market.
The agency has approved Pfizer / BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine for adults aged 16 and over. The first doses of vaccine will be delivered to Switzerland in the coming days. The first delivery will consist of 100,000 doses, followed by larger deliveries. The Swiss federal government has ordered 3 million doses of the vaccine, which requires two doses about three weeks apart.
Once delivered, the Swiss cantons will be able to start vaccinating in December 2020. From January 4, 2021, vaccination of vulnerable groups and other priority groups will begin throughout Switzerland, the government announced.
Swissmedic has reviewed the data on the safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine and has decided that it is suitable without age limit for all adults from 16 years of age.
As part of the national immunization strategy, priority will be given to vulnerable people at particularly high risk, including the elderly and people with underlying diseases.
The second priority will be given to health personnel, the third priority to people living with vulnerable people and the fourth priority to people in community facilities such as homes for the disabled where the risk of infection and epidemic is high, as well as to the staff of these establishments. facilities.
All other adults can then be vaccinated once enough vaccine is available. Children and pregnant women are not yet assigned to target groups as part of the immunization strategy, as study data for these groups are not yet available.
Swiss Medic is also studying other vaccines. The federal government has signed contracts for a total of approximately 15 million doses of the vaccine. In addition to the 3 million doses of Pfizer / BioNTech, contracts were signed for 4.5 million doses of Moderna and up to 5.3 million doses of AstraZeneca. The AstraZeneca vaccine is unlikely to be available until the middle of next year, the government said.
There is no mandatory vaccination requirement in Switzerland and there will be no cost for the Covid-19 vaccination.
