Many people will tell you that they are getting rich from bitcoin. They might be right. But there is another group of bitcoin owners who are not that ecstatic. Because they might be rich too, but they lost the password that would allow them to access their digital wealth. In the decentralized anti-government world of bitcoin, you cannot file a claim for damaged or lost currency. Either you have the key or you don’t.
Syl Turner is part of this second group, less glamorous. When he got about a bitcoins and a half about ten years ago, they were almost worthless. So useless, he put the hard drive that contained the key somewhere and now he can’t remember where.
We join Syl on a digital scavenger hunt, as he ventures into his attic in search of what could be the key to his Bitcoin wallet and tens of thousands of dollars. Next, Chainalysis’s Kimberly Grauer and Jonathan Levin help us understand how much bitcoin has been lost and why it’s so hard to find, and try to determine if there is a way to find Syl’s missing wealth.
