Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on Monday announced a host of new features for software running on its smartphones, tablets, computers and wearables at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, with a focus on privacy.
Here are the main conclusions of the conference:
FACETIME COMES ON ANDROID, WINDOWS
Apple’s FaceTime video and audio chat app adds the ability to schedule calls with multiple participants and makes the software compatible with Android and Windows devices. Unlike Zoom (ZM.O), Microsoft Corp Teams (MSFT.O), and other video conferencing services, FaceTime has been limited to Apple devices. The move comes amid a surge in video conferencing services, with users switching to remote work and online learning during the pandemic.
The new SharePlay feature will enable real-time interaction between people during FaceTime calls, including sharing videos, streaming shows and movies, as well as listening to music and screen sharing. SharePlay will sync everyone’s playback and is set to work with Disney + (DIS.N), ESPN +, HBO Max (TN), Hulu, MasterClass, Paramount + (VIAC.O), Pluto TV, TikTok, Twitch (AMZN.O) … … (https://apple.co/3cp3KHz)
DEVELOPERS RECEIVE EVENTS IN THE APP
Apple offered developers the ability to stream live in apps by invoking this feature from within apps.
The user can participate in activities such as live in-game competitions on the App Store using personalized recommendations, editorials, search results, and in-app product pages.
The move could increase competition from Facebook, which said Monday it plans to launch an online event business that will be free until 2023 and then charge a fee below 30% from Apple after that. read more
IPHONES TO REPLACE ACCOUNT CARDS
The iPhone maker also wants to offer the ability to store digitized versions of government-issued ID cards on its smartphones. He is working with the Transportation Security Administration on the adoption of digital IDs at airports, which is one of several software updates that run on his devices.
UPS PRIVACY FUNCTIONS
Apple introduced app privacy reporting as a new way for users to track how often third-party apps use data and where they send it.
Its email apps will be updated to block senders with trackers that detect when an email is opened.
In addition, Siri requests will now be handled entirely on the iPhone by default, without being redirected to Apple’s server to respond to requests, making the service faster and more secure.
ICLOUD BECOMES ICLOUD +
Apple has revised its subscription to the iCloud + storage service. New features include “private relaying”, which hides user identity and browsing data from both Apple and advertisers in the Safari web browser.
Another feature allows users to hide their email addresses when filling out online forms, helping them control who can contact them.
MACS CAN BE USED TO CONTROL OTHER Apple DEVICES
Apple has added a feature that will allow users to control multiple devices at the same time, including moving the cursor and dragging objects across screens, giving them the ability to control other Apple devices from Macs and laptops.
He announced other software improvements to make things easier on his devices. These features, like many of Apple’s other flagship features, will not work with third-party devices. (https://apple.co/3cp3KHz)
