Gallus launches Labelfire Low Migration – coating for printing inks, coatings and related industries

Engineers at Gallus and Heidelberg have perfected UV inkjet printing so that the Gallus Labelfire can produce certified food grade labels. The low migration version of Gallus Labelfire is designed for the production of food-compatible packaging in accordance with EU regulations and Swiss regulation.

To this end, the joint Gallus / Heidelberg development team has developed the Labelfire UVLM series of inks that are suitable for food contact packaging. Labelfire’s UV curing technology has also been optimized to improve ink film migration properties.

“The Gallus Labelfire Low Migration Program is a real innovation. Compared to the previous press, it makes no compromises when it comes to print quality, color gamut and ink fade resistance, ”said Uwe Alexander, Digital Product Manager for Gallus, describing the new digital press.

“We call it innovation because together with Heidelberg we have pushed the next level in UV inkjet technology,” added Thomas Schweizer, Head of Business and Product Management at Gallus. “This includes ink formulation and associated curing technology. This enables our customers to comply with the relevant EU regulations, as well as the guidelines of the Swiss Ordinance and the Nestlé Guidelines, in order to produce food-compliant labels and packaging. ”

A prerequisite for the production of food grade labels and packaging is compliance with the relevant legislation and, in addition, the requirements of distributors and brand owners. Therefore, Labelfire UVLM inks are compliant with EU regulations 10/2011, 1935/2004, 2023/2006 (GMP), Swiss regulation, Nestlé guidelines and EuPIA guidelines.

However, the use of such inks alone does not automatically ensure that the migration limits required to certify such labels are met.

New Labelfire Low Migration Curing System

An important production step takes place after inkjet printing with ink curing. Thus, in addition to the new ink series, the machine system also includes a highly efficient UV drying system to ensure optimal curing.

Immediately after printing, the substrate is fed into a dryer with an inert chamber that is filled with nitrogen. Extensive oxygen exclusion results in optimal curing of the paints. An additional UV amplifier improves the cure of Labelfire UVLM inks at higher print speeds, even at maximum production speed.

In addition to this new UV curing system, the Gallus Labelfire Low Migration is equipped with UV and oxygen sensors that measure production parameters. This supports quality assurance processes in label and packaging printing.
